Fuquay-Varina (Few-Quay Vuh-ree-nah) is a town located in Wake County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,898. The town is a 30 minute drive south of Raleigh, the capitol of North Carolina. Economically, the town initially grew due to tobacco trade and agriculture, but has seen recent population growth and real estate development due to its proximity to the Research Triangle Park.
Fuquay-Varina began as two communities: Fuquay Springs, a resort near a spring on Stephen Fuquay's property; and Varina, a ridge near a general store founded by J.D. Ballentine. When Fuquay Springs was incorporated in 1909, the Varina community was subsumed. In 1963, the hyphen was added to acknowledge the historical presence of both settlements.
Fuquay-Varina is located at 35°35'31" North, 78°47'19" West (35.591969, -78.788746).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 17.8 km2 (6.9 mi2). 17.7 km2 (6.8 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.04 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 7,898 people, 3,122 households, and 2,126 families residing in the town. The population density is 446.5/km2 (1,156.0/mi2). There are 3,375 housing units at an average density of 190.8/km2 (494.0/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 70.63% White, 24.40% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.94% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 7.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,122 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 35.2% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $42,903, and the median income for a family is $49,531. Males have a median income of $35,497 versus $28,551 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,268. 11.1% of the population and 9.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
